January 3rd, 2001
Association Management Powerhouse Formed with Merger of Kellen, Sumner Rider & RGM

The Kellen Company and Sumner Rider & Snyder today announced a merger of their companies. The merger was completed Dec. 22, 2000, and is effective as of January 1. At the same time, SRS acquired Resources for Group Management (RGM). The merger of the three companies forms the second largest association management firm in the United States.

The new employee-owned company, to be known as The Kellen Company, will manage 47 trade and professional associations representing more than 5,000 companies, and thousands more individuals, in a variety of industries. The merged firm will employ more than 100 people in its three offices in Atlanta, New York City and Washington, D.C. Sumner Rider & Associates, the award-winning public relations arm of SRS, will retain its name as an independent division of the company.

Robert C. Gelardi, chairman and president of the employee-owned Kellen Company for the past eight years, becomes chairman and CEO of the new Kellen Company. Peter Rush, chairman and CEO of SRS, is president and COO of the new firm. Richard Cristol, executive vice president of The Kellen Company and Russell Snyder, president of SRS, will serve as executive vice presidents. Marianne McDermott, owner and president of RGM, joins the current vice presidents.

“This merger establishes an association management firm of unique strength and breadth,” said Gelardi. He noted, “Each firm brings recognized quality leadership in distinct but complementary practice areas.” “Dovetailing the established strengths of our companies will provide our clients with the highest level of service, and allow us to build upon our collective commitment to customer satisfaction, ” added Rush.

In addition to traditional association management services, the new Kellen Company offers its clients access to practice specialties in public relations, crisis communications, government affairs, standards development, information technology, Internet services and meetings and exhibition management. Of special note is the new company’s broad regulatory expertise in dealing with the Food and Drug Administration, Department of Agriculture, Environmental Protection Agency, Consumer Product Safety Commission, Federal Trade Commission, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and Department of Transportation.

Prior to the merger, each company had developed a well-respected reputation for strong association management in specific industries. The Kellen Company, headquartered in Atlanta with offices also in Washington, has been an association management leader in the food, pharmaceutical and health care industries for 36 years. Sumner Rider & Snyder, the result of a 1999 merger between the then 54-year-old association management and public relations firm of Sumner Rider & Associates and the 13-year-old association management firm of Snyder Management Services, has a broad range of client representation in the construction, communications and home furnishing industries. SRS has offices in New York City and Washington. RGM, founded in 1987 and based in Washington, brings to the merger an established association management firm specializing in the legal profession, printing and publishing industries.

The new Kellen Company will continue its active membership in the International Association of Association Management Companies (IAAMC) and the Association Management Company (AMC) Section of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE).
