Association Management Companies Are Your Nonprofit's Path To Success
John H. Graham IV, president & CEO of the American Society of Association Executives, began his presentation today to association-management company owners with a joke.
“Maybe ASAE should put out proposals” to be managed by an AMC. “Wouldn’t that be fun?” he said to wide laughter. He quickly added, “I’ll let that idea pass for now.”
Graham also spoke about ASAE’s relationship with the AMC Institute in glowing terms. “It hasn’t always been that way, but for the past 10 years, it’s been a great relationship.”
Graham used his speech to highlight ASAE’s advocacy efforts — including the website ThePowerOfA.org — which emphasizes the importance and reach of associations and presumably wins favors with the AMC owners.
“ASAE created The PowerOfA.org to tell the story of how associations impact our future, fuel the economy, enrich lives and keep us competitive,” he said.
Graham also discussed association health, highlighting favorable trends since the Great Recession year of 2010. He noted that professional fees are up to 6.5% of revenue, dues revenue is steady at 33% of revenue, and meetings revenue is steady at 25% of revenue.
Graham disclosed that ASAE’s vaunted Operating Ratio Report, released in book form, will next be issued as a dynamic tool with real-time data.
He concluded by encouraging attendees to think about generational and minority population growth and the challenges and opportunities for association management. He also emphasized the importance of adopting mobile technology.
